Kashmir might not be the most popular education hub for medical studies. However, the pace at which the region is slated to grow across all fronts, it might soon be considered among the top medical education spots in the country in the near future. As of now, at least, we can say it has a few medical colleges that impart quality medical education and have shaped the career of many who are successful doctors today. Accordingly, let us look at the five medical colleges in J&K.

1. Government Medical College, Srinagar
GMC Srinagar is the first college in J&K and one of the oldest medical colleges across northern India. The college was established in 1959. GMC Srinagar offers courses such as MBBS, PG Diploma in Anesthesiology, MD in Anatomy, MD in Anesthesiology, MD, Microbiology, MS, and many others.
2. Government Medical College, Jammu
Government Medical College, Jammu, popularly known as GMC, Jammu, is another reputed medical college. The college was established in 1973 with an aim to provide top-class yet reasonably priced medical services to J&K’s youth. The institution is one of the best residential and co-educational medical colleges in India. Courses offered include MBBS, GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery), MD, MS, Diploma courses in anesthesia, obstetrics, and gynecology.
3. Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences, Jammu
Known as ASCOMS, Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences, Jammu is one of the popular medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir. The college was founded in 1969. It offers several courses related to medicine. Some include MBBS, PG courses such as MD Radio Diagnosis, MD Pathology, MD General Medicine, and MS General Surgery. The college is affiliated with the University of Jammu.
4. SKIMS Srinagar – Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences
SKIMS Srinagar, as mentioned on its website, is a postgraduate institute for training, research, and patient care. The institute received a deemed university status by an act of the legislature on August 19, 1983. It offers several doctoral, post-doctoral, postgraduate, diploma, graduate, PG Diploma, and PG Tech courses.
5. Government Medical College, Doda
GMC Doda is a comprehensive tertiary medical college in the Doda region of Kashmir. Established in 2020, the college is a relatively new addition to Kashmir’s medical education horizon. Currently, the college offers an MBBS course. It is affiliated with the University of Jammu and is recognized by the National Medical Commission.
Some other medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir include Government Medical College, Anantnag, Institute of Asian Medical Sciences Unani Medical College and Hospital, Srinagar, Jammu Institute of Ayurveda and Research, Institute of Dental Sciences, Jammu, Jammu College of Physiotherapy, and Kashmir Tibbia College Hospital and Research Centre, Bandipora. However, with infrastructural growth and investments flowing into Kashmir, we hope to see many other colleges emerging in the years to come!
