Lately, Trout fishing has gained a lot of importance in the Kashmir region. It has generated employment for many across the valley, and the producers also are loving their business, owing to the high production and healthy profits associated with them. Companies like Trout on Wheels have been helping grow the horizon of trout farming in Kashmir through a trout procurement and delivery service. Let’s know more.
The Reasons for the Growth of Trout Fishing in Kashmir
Kashmir isn’t a coastal zone. In fact, it is a landlocked region surrounded by mountains everywhere. However, how did trout fish farming or Trout fishing flourish here?
Everyone has heard about freshwater fishing, which contributes significantly to the expansion of the fishing sector each year. Trout fishing refers to fish breeding in freshwater. Kashmir’s weather has been conducive for trout farming and fishing. Moreover, heavy snowfall has helped made a substantial amount of freshwater available for trout breeders.
Additionally, trout fishing can be a significant source of employment. Several Kashmiris have found employment in the form of trout fishing and allied jobs. Many among these are people who lost their jobs during the COVID lockdown and the economic decline that followed it.
Nevertheless, the sustained growth of trout fishing is possible only when producers can reach people interested in buying trout fish. A group of entrepreneurs identified the need and started Trout on Wheels, a trout procurement and delivery service.
How did Trout on Wheels Start?
Trout on Wheels fundamentally operates to promote and sell trout fish by delivering it to people’s doorstep. Three entrepreneurs, Maqsood Badyari, Aaqib Mushtaq, and Habib Khankash started a small-scale business to promote Kashmiri products and provide some employment to the local youth.
Until Trout on Wheels, Kashmir didn’t have a trout fishing delivery system. These entrepreneurs sensed an opportunity and started commercial trout fishing delivery.
The concerned administrative officials, when contacted with the proposal, liked the idea and approved every possible help. After all the approvals were in place, the team brought seven vehicles on board, all with inbuilt freezers to deliver fresh trout.
How does Trout on Wheels Work?
Trout on Wheels works on a cooperative basis, wherein the team will procure fish from the fisheries department and farmers. The firm has employed many youngsters.
In the future, scaling it up can create the need for an even higher number of jobs. Accordingly, the company plans to expand to the other districts of Kashmir over time. It aims to continue promoting Trout fishing and providing employment to Kashmir’s youth.
Kashmir’s entrepreneurial horizon is expanding at a rapid pace. Youth with entrepreneurial abilities and skills are increasingly stepping ahead to improve the economic and employment situation in Kashmir. We hope Trout fishing keeps growing steadily and partners such as Trout on Wheels provide sustainable growth to this relatively new profession in Kashmir.
